Since the very first Jewlicious Festival in 2005, we have discussed Judaism and the environment. We’ve highlighted “greenkeit” from recycling in Jerusalem to ecology and Judaism. Last year we stopped printing the programs individually to save paper. We print large copies of the program and post them on the walls. However, in 2008, we are going green. In an effort to make Jewlicious reflect our own values and the values of many of the participants, this year’s Festival is going green.

Participants will notice our green efforts, to not only limit the impact of our festival on the environment, but to engage each other on green issues more than ever before.

For example, we are using sustainable cotton t-shirts, recycled paper for posters and programs, soy-based inks. We are using green compostable plates & cups made from sugar cane fibers and composting our waste. In collaboration with Long Beach Conservation Corps, we will be recycling all bottles and cans. The LBCC program helps Long beach teenagers finish their high school education, by involvement in community service projects. All funds from the recycling go to help the Corps.

Long Beach Water Department, a national leader in conservation and water use reduction, will be educating students about water use. The LBWD will be creating an educational booth at the Jewlicious Souk, specifically aimed at educating college age adults.

There will be a green kosher food table at the Jewlicious Souk, showcasing foods that are both green and kosher.

Also planned is an electric car/alt fuel vehicles exhibit, where students can learn about alternatives to combustible engine transportation.

Students can bring old electronics and we are planning an Electronic recycling booth on Friday when you arrive.

And there will be more green stuff going down too!

We are proud and honored to announce that Matisyahu and Tahlia Miller will be joining us as presenters this year at Jewlicious 4.0 ! We were graced with Matisyahu’s presence for Jewlicious 2.0, and we are fortunate that his recording and touring schedule allow him to return to help make Jewlicious 4.0 the most unforgettable weekend.

Tahlia Miller, who presented at Jewlicious Festival in 2006 and 2007, will be previewing her documentary film, Can’t Touch This at our Docu-Film-Slam. Matisyahu will be presenting this year, teaching on Spirituality.

Kosha Dillz is an upcoming Israeli American hip hop artist that has put the Zionist swagger back in being Jewish. A flashy pinky ring style and gold-star dress code using crowd moving beats and profound lyrics in Hebrew, English and Spanish this unorthodox boom bap-ist’s knowledge of emceeing brings the pride back that you might have once lost.

Kosha will be performing March 1st, as a guest with Y-Love and also on Sunday, March 2, on the Acoustic Stage.

DJ HANDLER (NYC) – Erez a.k.a. dj handler is the founder and director of Shemspeed (largest, most diverse Jewish music site), Modular Moods (an independent record label), The Sephardic Music Festival and Hip Hop Sulha. As the brains behind the Shemspeed empire and many of the hyped parties in and around NYC, dj handler defies musical stereotypes. As a multicultural maestro, he spins a mix of Baile Funk and Afro Beat blended with 80′s free style and hip hop, while incorporating Ashkenazic cantorial music and traditional Yemenite melodies . He has performed with Lou Reed, Anthony Coleman, Matisyahu, MC Paul Barman, Spankrock, and Idan Raichel, and countless others. The Village Voice stated that his work “as producer and DJ is among the most adventurous and banging on the new Jewish music scene;” and the Forward listed him as one of the Top 50 “most influential Jews of 2007″. dj handler’s music, style, and presence get famous US clubs to resemble the craziest festivals abroad.

The Israeli-born Moshav grew up on Moshav Meor Modi’im, a musical village located in the hills between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. Their home, founded by the late Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, was and continues to be the birthplace of many Jewish songs enjoyed by the world over. The members of the Moshav were under the spiritual guidance of Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, while immersed in his musical world, often performing with him at his concerts.

Moshav, primarily composed of brothers Yehuda (vocals, percussion), Meir (vocals, guitar, mandolin) , Yosef (bass) Solomon, and David (vocals, guitar) comes on like a family of traveling minstrels, court jesters, and the old-age mystics all at once. Their music is rich with fiery rock/folk/reggae songs, spiced with the flavors of the Middle East. The boys draw you into their own struggles, and leave you pondering your own, but not before they provide you with a huge helping of hope.

Their powerful sound has been heard at music festivals and more intimate settings worldwide. Projects in which Moshav have played an essential role include The Wake Up Tour (a Northern American Jewish Renewal project), and Israeli Block Parties, organized to increase Israel and Jewish awareness. Now based in Los Angeles, the band continues to ignite audiences throughout the US and worldwide, including their recent tour of Australia.

The streets are lined with Escalade limos. We had to come up here to see what all the fuss was about. It definitely exceeded our expectations. Lexus has a lounge. So does Kenneth Cole. And Stella Artois has a great location, but none of the crowds that were attempting to get into the Heineken / Fred Segal lounge down Main Street. The line for Heineken went down the block. The Delta 360’s line spilled over the sidewalk, the barriers, the maze of ropes, and had stopped traffic. There is tons of traffic. Gypsy limos empty like clown cars. How do they all get into that car?

You need tags, passes, or the right tattoo to enter hip parties, unless people recognize you. They say there are movies to see also.Regardless of what Robert Redford says, it appears that the real reason so many people are here is not for the movies. Rather it is to grab gifts, to see and be seen. Oh, and promote JF4.0. Of course this is precisely why we are here in Sundance to promote Jewlicious Festival. Well, and to be seen -we are not sure by who yet.

Adam Mansbach’s most recent novel is the critically-acclaimed bestseller Angry Black White Boy, or The Miscegenation of Macon Detornay (Crown, 2005), a satire about race, whiteness and hip hop that is currently taught at more that forty universities across the country. A San Francisco Chronicle Best Book of 2005, Angry Black White Boy is currently in development as a feature film.

Mansbach’s next novel, The End of the Jews, will be published on March 18, 2008 by Spiegel & Grau/Doubleday. An ambitious and affecting family drama and a sweeping tour of race, religion, art and identity in 20th century America, The End of the Jews tells the story of the Brodskys, a family of Jewish artists and writers whose bumpy ride through 20th century America – from shtetl to suburbs- is fueled by an obsessive quest for love and inspiration.

Mansbach’s previous books include the novel Shackling Water (Doubleday, 2002), the poetry collection genius b-boy cynics getting weeded in the garden of delights (Subway & Elevated, 2002), and the short story anthology A Fictional History of the United States With Huge Chunks Missing (Akashic, 2006), which he co-edited with T Cooper.

Mansbach is the founding editor of the pioneering ’90s hip hop journal Elementary, and Artistic Consultant to Columbia University’s Center for Jazz Studies. His work has appeared in publications including The Boston Globe, The San Francisco Chronicle, The New York Times, Vibe, Giant, JazzTimes, Wax Poetics, San Francisco Bay Guardian, Guilt & Pleasure, Poets & Writers, Total Chaos: The Art and Aesthetics of Hip Hop (Basic Civitas, 2007), The Best Music Writing (Da Capo, 2004), and Brooklyn Noir (Akashic, 2003).
