What did YOU do last weekend?

I have no clue about you, but I do know how about 150 college students and young adults spent the weekend at the 2nd Annual Camp Jewlicious at the Brandeis Bardin Institute in Simi Valley, CA. They swam, rode mountain bikes, climbed walls, rappelled, rode horses, tie dyed t-shirts, enjoyed Shabbat, had some great conversations, enjoyed some excellent speakers, made candles, baked challah, enjoyed some great music and generally partied like rock stars. Well, I mean if rock stars partied on lush 3000 acre properties amongst pheasants, squirrels, lizards and coyotes.

Camp Jewlicious was fun, meaningful and a great experience all around. Big ups go out to our entertainers: Rav Shmuel, Natan Winkler, Mikey Pauker, Josh Kramon, Hyim and DJ Shachar; Big ups also to our staff and volunteers as well as the staff at Brandeis Bardin. But mostly, a big thanks to our participants. OK, I know that’s kind of odd. I mean we worked hard and they reaped the benefits by simply showing up and enjoying the program, so why thank them? I guess it’s because we work hard for them, and when they show up and enjoy themselves, it’s like instant validation, a direct shot of dopamine to our collective cerebral cortex.

But yeah, don’t take my word for it. Check out all the photos on Flickr below. People seem to be having a good time, right? Right!

When Ziggy Marley and Alpha Blondy performed in Park Eshkol in 1987, it marked my first major reggae and African music concert. The nighttime performances helped us to avoid the scorching day-time heat. After surviving in the shade with 3 digit hear – I danced to inspired performances that planted seeds that eventually became our own Jewlicious festival.

Ziggy here is being interviewed by Ynet- the interviewer is totally wack – but the first part where he talks about Judaism, and the last part where he talks about peace and dismisses the Cottage Cheese crises are worth seeing.

From YNetnews.com

Ziggy Marley feels very close to Israel. He’s married to Orly, an Israeli woman, and they have three children: A girl named Judah Victoria, a boy called Gideon, and a baby – Abraham Selassie.

Marley admits that, having no other choice, he celebrates all the Jewish holidays and is very jealous of our culture.

“The history of our connection to the roots of Israel, to David, Solomon, goes way before I met my wife,” Marley says. “My father, my Rastafari culture, has a tight link to the Jewish culture. We have a strong connection from when I was a young boy and read the Bible, the Old Testament.

Kalkidan Mashasha, Israeli Hip Hop Reggae Artist says music is in his soul.

As one of Israel’s emerging rap artists, Kalkidan’s songs take on all aspects of Israeli life. His often raw and honest lyrics have given him a passionate following, packing his performances throughout Tel Aviv. Kalkidan is proud that his music is seen as outside the mainstream and looks to Tupac, Tracy Chapman and Bob Marley as strong musical influences.

Arriving from Ethiopia at age four, Kalkidan settled with his family outside Tel Aviv in Yavne. At 13, Kalkidan discovered he had a talent at writing rhymes. By 16 his popular performances were packing neighborhood community centers and Kalkidan quickly developed a following. While serving in the army he wrote his first album. The album expresses Kalkidan’s mantra of not accepting the status quo and his belief in remaining optimistic in the face of all challenges. Kalkidan draws inspiration from his father who was held as a “Prisoner of Zion” in Ethiopia for his role in getting Ethiopian Jews to Israel in the late 1980’s.

Kalkidan means “convenant.” Kalkidan lives his covenant with his music and his promise to himself to remain true his art form. Kalkidan has been recognized internationally for his creative contribution to the world of Hip Hop/Reggae and is a pioneer in this genre in Israel.
